Pre-K overview

A free pre-kindergarten (pre-K) program for four-year-olds in the McMinnville School District (MSD) is offered in morning or afternoon sessions at Buel, Columbus, GrandhavenNewby and Wascher elementary schools.

MSD's pre-K is a nurturing, hands-on program to develop a child's love for learning and school.

The programs run Mondays - Thursdays with the morning session from 8:15 - 10:45 a.m., and the afternoon session from 11:45 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. Parents must provide transportation to and from school.

Future MSD kindergarten students in this program will learn school routines and participate in kindergarten readiness activities in literacy and math. Each site includes morning (beginning with free breakfast) and afternoon (beginning with free lunch) sessions. The program follows the MSD school calendar with the exception of starting one day later in September and ending one day earlier in June.
Because the district believes that it is critical to have families involved in their child’s pre-K experience, participation requirements for the program include:
  • At least one family member must volunteer a minimum of 2.5 hours a month to the program.
  • At least one family member must attend the three birth-to-five READY! for Kindergarten parent workshops, scheduled Thursday evenings throughout the school year. Dates for 2020-21 include October 15, 2020; January 21, 2021; and April 22, 2021. Click here for more about READY! for Kindergarten.

Sixty percent of our preschool slots will be reserved for students in families who experience limited income consistent with USDA income guidelines for free or reduced meals (click here for guidelines).
