board meeting 10/8/18

School board proclaims “Hands & Words Are Not for Hurting” week
Posted on 10/09/2018

The McMinnville School Board issued a formal proclamation declaring Oct. 14 – 20, 2018 to be “Hands & Words Are Not for Hurting” week. The proclamation was read into the record by board chair Barbara Carter after a presentation by project officials and the purple bear mascot.

The week is part of a campaign that seeks to end abuse and violence in homes, schools and communities around the world.

The meeting also included the first reports of the student envoys, McMinnville High School ASB officers Tommy Douglass, president; and Eli Wiles, vice-president. Student envoys attend board meetings throughout the school year to report on activities taking place at the high school each month.

In other board happenings, Duniway Middle School students demonstrated some of the activities included in the first session of the new Makerspace lunchtime project taking place at the school. The project is part of a new district-wide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) initiative.  Click here to read more about STEAM Ahead: Makerspaces are Creative Places.

Students enlisted the help of the student envoys to show how they deconstructed some computer equipment to get a sense of how the equipment was put together and what’s inside. Upcoming sessions will focus on other themes like creating things with paper and fabric.

Students can participate during the three different lunch periods offered at Duniway.
